Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
What does it really mean to trust God? What does that look like? God calls us all to trust Him in everything that we do and if we are obedient, then He promises to never lead us astray. How do we remove our human pride and trust God with everything? It is so easy to say that we trust God but in reality we are only trusting Him with parts of our life—the parts we choose. We say we trust Him to take care of our situations all the while we are working in the background to make things happen the way we want them to turn out. God does not need us to tell Him how it should be.
I have been unemployed for the last six months. I have worked in management for the last 23 years so finding a job should be easy right? So I thought. I applied for job after job with no luck. It started out that I couldn’t even get an interview then every once in a while I would get a call for an interview only to never hear from them again. Well, I thought maybe my interview skills were a little rusty. After all, I was used to sitting on the other side of the table. So with each interview they began to fall in place but still no job.
I was beginning to question why God was not providing me with a job. Well, there are several reasons why it was not happening and it all centered around a lesson in humility and trust. I kept praying, “Why God? What do you want me to learn? Can you just tell me so I can look for the lesson?” That in and of itself was a lesson in patience.
I was humbled to accept help but found my pride getting in the way when offered help from those in our church. That was surely one of the hardest things I ever had to do so it became apparent that God was teaching me humility. It took some time but He continued to provide for my family through others so I would learn to accept help offered in love. I was reminded that if someone else were in need, I would be the one providing the help. I had no right to rob others of their blessing or to rob God of His glory!
At this point I am still praying that God would show me what He wanted me to learn. I have a faith that can move a mountain…isn’t that enough? Faith is nothing more than lip service without action to back it up. That is where trust comes in.
Last week I was sitting on my couch when all of a sudden my face turned bright red, and it felt as though my head was going to explode. I then felt like I was going to pass out so I looked at my wife and told her how I was feeling just in case I did. It subsided and feeling a bit odd, I asked my wife to come sit next to me and I held her hand. Suddenly I realized that I was telling my hand to squeeze her hand and it wasn’t. I told my arm to move and it refused. I was having a stroke. Now I was scared! My wife took me to the hospital and was promptly told about a treatment that could lead to a brain bleed and I could die. Why in the world would a doctor lead with that? He must have been absent the day they discussed bedside manner.
I don’t need to tell you that I was scared to death. I was not so much afraid of death but more in the manner in which it would happen and leaving my family alone. I had to discuss it with my wife all the while two doctors and three nurses stood there and watched and listened. This was not something I could decide on my own so we prayed. I asked God to please give the doctors wisdom and to help me to have peace with whatever He wanted to do. I said, “I trust you Jesus with all my being. Do with me what you please.” Then I looked at the nurse and said, “Do what needs to be done.” I remember feeling a calm peace come over me as she drew the medicine from the bottle. Then suddenly I could move my hand, arm, and leg. Then He whispered to me, “This is what it is like to trust me.”
And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You. Psalm 9:10 NKJV
Not only was I taught a lesson in trust, but I was also able to be a testimony to the doctors and nurses. God be glorified! My life has not been the same since. Three days ago, I had an interview with a company that offered me a job on the spot. Before the interview, I prayed to God that I trusted Him with this and if He opened the door, I would walk through. Not only did He open the door, but the man that interviewed me was a Christian so we were able to discuss more of me as a person rather than my resume. That was refreshing and comfortable. It was only that easy because I trusted God with the outcome.
It is far too easy to trust God with all the seemingly mundane parts of our lives but yet we hold back when it comes to the real issues. We trust God to take care of us, yet we are unwilling to trust Him with our finances. We trust God to get us to and from work safely each day yet we are unable, or unwilling to trust Him to provide for our families. Why do you think that is? Is it sinful pride or perhaps fear? What is it that we are really afraid of?
I think many of us are afraid to turn over total control because we are afraid of how God will work in our lives. Will I still have this big house or new car? Will He allow me to keep this job? Will I still have a position of authority? True trust comes without looking at what the outcome will be. People are inherently afraid of change.
God did not create us to fail….
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
Nor did he create us to be afraid….
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. II Timothy 1:7 NKJV
In fact, God does not make mistakes. Therefore you were born into this life for a specific purpose for His kingdom.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 NKJV
God breathed life into all of us because He saw potential in us. He came to earth in order to be the Light that overcomes the darkness that separates us from God that we may be restored to Him. He shed His blood on an old rugged cross so that you and I no longer had to be condemned. And remember that He did all of this long before you were ever born. He loved us so much that although He knew what we would do in this life to turn away from Him, he decided that we were worth the sacrifice. All we have to do is accept it.
If you are struggling with something today that prevents you from completely trusting God, I encourage you to pray that God will teach you trust. I know that can sound scary, but that is where the trust comes in. Why would God create you just to mislead you? If you happen to be reading this today and you do not know Jesus as your personal Savior, please pray with me right now.
“Dear God, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son and I believe that He died for my sins and that You raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as the Lord of my life. Guide my life and help me to do your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”
Dear Jesus, I want to thank you for all your wonderful grace and mercy that you pour out on me each day. I know that there are many times that I fall short of Your expectations and for that I ask Your forgiveness. Lord, I ask that You be with each and every person that reads this that You may use my testimony to touch someone’s life if that be Your will. Jesus, thank You for teaching me about trust and for Your healing touch on my body. I trust You with my life and whatever may come my way, I know that it is Your will and therefore perfect in every way. I will continue to give you all the praise and glory forever. Amen.
If you find that you are struggling with anything and just want someone to talk to, know that I am always here for you no matter who you are. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns you may have or reach out to someone that you trust that can help to guide you in the right direction. If you have a prayer need I would be happy to pray with you. Trust in God!
